  • This term is used to describe modified yoga poses done while seated in a chair. This makes yoga accessible to everyone who cannot stand, lacks mobility, or wants a quick break from performing office work. Yes, please! Perfect for beginners.

  • A method of yoga where the movements form a flowing sequence in combination with the breath. Vinyasa is also perfect for beginners. It is easily taught to levels 1 and 2 simultaneously with instructions given to take the poses further to more seasoned practitioners. Everyone’s practice is different from one another’s.

  • The practice of (vinyasa) yoga in a heated setting. It can be rigorous or restorative. Average room temperature for hot yoga is generally between 90 and 105 degrees. Not for the faint of heart! Sweating out the body’s toxins can make you feel amazing for days.

  • Yin yoga is a slow-paced style of yoga, which incorporates principles of traditional Chinese medicine with postures. The postures may be held for as long as 5 minutes. Yin has roots in India and China.

  • This type of yoga encourages physical, mental, and emotional relaxation. It is practiced at a slower pace using props (blocks, straps and pillows) to support the poses. The poses are usually held for 5 minutes, but you have the props. Perfect for beginners and a well-deserved change for advanced practitioners.

  • Sound healing or sound therapy is the practice of using music to improve your health and general well-being. It uses the vibrations of sound to lull you into a meditative state. It is thought to help with stress management, anxiety, depression, and pain management. Sound healing has been dated back to thousands of years. Sound healing can be performed alone or combined with restorative yoga. You are in for a treat!

WHAT IS YOGA?

Yoga is connecting your breath with movements called “asanas,” which are made up of poses called “postures.” The goal is to have the practitioner focus only on the breath and movement in the yoga session. You can free your mind of all the clutter that disrupts your tranquility and peace. As you begin to incorporate yoga into your life more and more, you will learn to take your practice “off the mat” and into your daily life. This will help you breathe through stressful situations and better handle the problems we have as humans, called the “human condition.”

Yoga is good for your physical body as well. However, yoga is not simply working out; it’s working in. You can simply google and find hundreds of articles but to summarize: yoga can help you lose weight, increase strength, increase flexibility, improve balance and reduce stress. Don’t we all want healthier bodies?

In terms of your mental health, a consistent yoga practice will lift your spirit, helps prevent depression and reduce anxiety, and relax the mind. Don’t we all desire reduced stress?

In terms of spirituality, there are many misconceptions and outright untruths about yoga. Anyone can practice yoga purely as a physical practice, i.e., exercise. Yoga is an ancient practice created more than 4,000 years ago. Yoga poses are often called by their Sanskrit names. For example “downward facing dog” is “adho mukha svanasana.” But don’t worry, you don’t have to learn those names unless you want to! Since “yoga” means “union” you are creating not only a union between your breath and your movement, but a union between your true self and the Creator.

But don’t take our word for it, come try it for yourself! It will enrich your life in physical, mental and spiritual ways as much as you’d like for it to. Yoga is truly for everyone.
